Chaukhutia is a small hamlet located in Almora district of Uttarakhand state. Chaukhutia is about 88 km away from Almora. This place is situated on the banks of river Ramganga. Chaukhutia is derived from the Kumauni word "Chau-Khut", which means four foot. This place offers an opportunity to see the ancient forts and ruins of the Katyuri dynasty. History of Chaukhutia is very old. Chaukhutia is also known as Vairaat. It is said that the current Chaukhutia was the capital of the Hindu epic of King Virata. According to the epic Mahabharata, Virata was a king, in whose kingdom Pandavas had spent a year hiding during his exile.
