"Haldwani is known as the gateway of the Kumaon". It is one of the important business towns of Uttarakhand, Haldwani is the ultimate point of the plains and Kathgodam is the last stop for the train. Haldwani was known as Haldu-Vani, This name was taken from the name of "Haldu tree". In 1816, after defeating the Gorkhas, the British appointed Gardner as Commissioner of Kumaon. Later George William brought over as Commissioner and renamed Haldu-Vani as Haldwani in 1834. Haldwani is a popular commercial center. It is one of the largest vegetable, fruit & food markets in Kumaon. Here is the Gaula river which is the main source of drinking water for this region. The Gaula river is used every year for a big number of stones, sand & gravel, and becomes a major revenue source for both government & local business. There is a place like Nainital and Jim Corbett near Haldwani, where every year tourist come to visit and enjoy visiting these places.

The best time to visit Haldwani is from September to March as the weather turns salubrious during this period of time. Travelling here in these months is the best and enjoyable. During the winter season, the weather of here is cold. Due to cold in the winter season, the temperature of here goes down very much. Due to the cold weather of winter, woollen clothing is required here. Due to heavy rains in the rainy season, it is a bit difficult to travel of here because of rains. The temperature of here between from 5°C to 15°C in the winter season and the temperature in the summer season is between 25°C to 40°C.
