"Haldwani is known as the gateway of the Kumaon". It is one of the important business towns of Uttarakhand, Haldwani is the ultimate point of the plains and Kathgodam is the last stop for the train. Haldwani was known as Haldu-Vani, This name was taken from the name of "Haldu tree". In 1816, after defeating the Gorkhas, the British appointed Gardner as Commissioner of Kumaon. Later George William brought over as Commissioner and renamed Haldu-Vani as Haldwani in 1834. Haldwani is a popular commercial center. It is one of the largest vegetable, fruit & food markets in Kumaon. Here is the Gaula river which is the main source of drinking water for this region. The Gaula river is used every year for a big number of stones, sand & gravel, and becomes a major revenue source for both government & local business.
