Kalpavriksha is a holy old tree located in Joshimath of Chamoli district. This tree is considered to be around 1200 years old. Kalpavriksha is known in the mythology as Kalpatru. It is believed that Adi Guru Shankaracharya sat down under this tree and worshipped Lord Shiva. Jyoteshwar Mahadev Temple is built under this tree, which is dedicated to Lord Shiva. Kalpavriksha is known as the mythological tree. According to legend, when the sea churning (Samudra Manthan) was done by the gods and demons, this tree emerged during churning. It is believed that the great sage Durvasa also had penance under this tree. The circumference of this tree is around 21.5 meters. This tree remains evergreen for the whole year. During the Joshimath journey, pilgrim also darshan the holy Kalpavriksha tree.
