Roopkund is a famous glacier lake. This lake is located near Bedini Bugyal further of Karnaprayag of Chamoli district. The lake is situated at an elevation of about 5030 meters. Roopkund lake is also known as a dead body and a Kund of the skeleton. It is believed that this Kund was built by Lord Shiva for his wife Devi Nanda. It is said that, when Goddess Nanda was going to the Himalayas from her maternal house, then them thirst was on the way, and she expresses the desire to quench the thirst for water from Lord Shiva. Then Lord Shiva creates a kund from his trident to quench the thirst of Goddess Nanda, at the same place. Given the beautiful reflection of the mother's water, this Kund was given the name "Roopkund" by Lord Shiva. Even today, whenever the 'Nanda Devi Raaj Jaat Yatra' is visited by local people, the journey definitely stops on Roopkund. By stopping nearby this kund, Doli of Mata is prepared and rested. Due to the male skeletons found on this lake, it has been in lot discussion. The route to get here is extremely insurmountable. Roopkund is an ideal place for adventure trekking.

To reach Roopkund, have to reach the Wan village from Karnprayag. After about 10 km of climbing from the Wan village to Bedini Bugyal, Roopkund is situated at a distance of 14 km from Bedini Bagyal.
The best time to travel to Roopkund is between months May and June and September to October. Travelling here in these months is the best and enjoyable. During the winter season, the weather of here is cold. Due to snowfall on the surrounding hills in the winter season, the temperature of here goes down very much. Due to heavy rains in the rainy season, it is a bit difficult to travel of here because of heavy rains threatening landslides.
