Kapileshwar Mahadev Temple is a famous temple located in Pithoragarh. This temple is situated on a delightful hill on the Ancholi village of Pithoragarh. Situated in about 10 meters deep cave, this temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva. According to legend, at this place, the incarnation of Lord Vishnu, Maharishi Kapil Muni had austerity, that is why it is known as "Kapileshwar". Inside the cave, there are shapes of Shiva, Sun and Shivalinga on a rock are present. To reach the main temple, there are more than about 200 stairs to climb. There is an idol installed here. The legend of that statue is such that, was a cow in the village near this area give milk on that idol every day, but one day the cow's owner suddenly seen the cow is giving milk on idol, and he broke the statue in anger. On the next day go there a cave appeared, it is believed that there is a tunnel attached to the cave, from where there is a great view of "Sor Valley" i.e. "Pithoragarh" appears. On the day of Shivratri, a grand fair is organized on this temple and awakening in the night. During the trip to Pithoragarh, tourists visit in this holy temple. Kapileshwar Mahadev Temple is one of the main religious centres of attraction in Pithoragarh.
